Many women come to On Stage Hair Studio dismayed about the extent of their hair loss. We understand: No woman welcomes thinning hair, and the prospect of advanced hair loss can be devastating. For as heart-wrenching, as female hair loss can be, there’s no cause for despair. There are plenty of options for restoring your hair to its previous volume and length.

An important first step is evaluating your scalp and follicles. There are many different causes of hair loss in women, and looking at your scalp and hair follicles can help furnish some clues as to how to address the problem.

What Causes Women’s Hair Loss?

To understand the causes of female hair loss, it’s first necessary to know how healthy follicles behave. Your follicles alternate between a growth phase, in which new hairs are generated, and a rest phase, in which older hairs are discarded to make room for new growth. At any given moment, you may have up to 10 percent of your follicles in the rest phase. You may lose up to 100 hairs daily. This isn’t just normal; it’s part of the healthy hair growth process.

Anything that disrupts this cycle can cause women’s thinning hair, or even baldness. Sometimes, these disruptions involve prolonging the rest phase. In other cases, they can make the growth phase less productive. Virtually all the major causes of female hair loss fit into one or both of these categories.

Different Causes of Female Hair Loss

With men, there is one major cause of hair loss, and that’s male pattern baldness. With women, the causes tend to be a little bit more varied. With that said, there is certainly a condition known as female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. Genetic in nature, this condition is caused by an excess of DHT, a testosterone byproduct that binds with the follicles and prevents them from being fully productive.

Many cases of female hair loss are a result of this condition. However, there are a number of other causes to be aware of. Women’s thinning hair may be caused by:

  • Autoimmune conditions, such as alopecia totalis and universalis, can cause the white blood cells to attack the follicles as though they are foreign invaders. These conditions are rare, but can cause hair loss across the body.
  • Lifestyle factors, including unsound or insufficient nutrition. Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies may impoverish the follicles and stymy hair growth.
  • Hairstyling, including overreliance on hot appliances and on tight buns, braids, and ponytails.
  • Trichotillomania, a nervous condition that leads to the compulsive biting and twisting of the hair.
  • Medical treatments, including not just chemotherapy and radiation, but certain prescription medications.
  • Hormonal shifts, such as those that can occur during pregnancy or menopause.

There are a number of factors that can cause women to lose their hair, and while they are all unwelcome, they are all manageable, as well. When you join us in our Slidell, LA studio for a consultation, we’ll be happy to talk further about potential causes of women’s hair loss, and about ways to move forward.
