Curly Hair Tips

Are you a curly girl?

If so, you know that your hair is completely different from all other hair types. From fighting frizz on humid days to finding the right cut and style, you may feel that your hair is often more foe than friend. Our hair salon in Slidell understands curly hair! We will be happy to work with you to choose a cut & style as well as specific styling products that will bring out the best in your lovely locks!

Our daily hair care tips below will also help you to keep your hair hydrated, shiny, and healthy between visits to our hair salon.

Our Best Tips:

Combing & Detangling:

Brushes, especially when used on dry hair, can cause frizz and should be avoided. Instead choose a flexible, wide tooth comb or even your fingers to comb your hair! Fingers can be amazing de-tanglers. Start at the ends and work your way up. Be careful not to pull or tug at your hair when combing and detangling.

Shampooing:

A gentle moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is the best option for keeping your hair hydrated and frizz free. Detergents found in most shampoos have strong lathering agents that will strip your hair of moisture, leaving it dry and crunchy. Choose a sulfate-free, deep moisturizing shampoo and conditioner instead for gentle cleansing.

For Conditioning:

Curly hair craves moisture, and the curlier your hair is, the more moisture it needs. After shampooing, you can leave a small amount of conditioner in your hair to add moisture as well as extra curl definition and softness. You can also use a leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners are light-weight products that will keep your hair quenched without weighing your hair down. Leave in conditioners will also help to combat frizz.

  • For wavy, finer, sparser hair types, avoid applying conditioner to the scalp area and apply it only to the mid and lower sections of your hair
  • For curlier, coarser, thicker hair types, apply conditioner often and all-over. The curlier your hair is, the more moisture it needs.

Paul Mitchell’s Full Circle Leave-In Treatment is an excellent lightweight leave-in conditioning treatment. Every curl is replenished with this creamy formula that creates a silky, smooth hair surface. In addition to hydrating the hair, this product also helps to tame frizz, protect against damage, and keep tangles to a minimum. To use, after shampooing, gently towel dry hair and then evenly apply Full Circle by using a pea-sized amount per section of hair for thorough coverage. Next, lightly scrunch hair and allow hair to air dry if possible or diffuse on low heat.

For Styling:

Twirl Around by Paul Mitchell is another great product for our Slidell hair salon clients with curls. This product offers the benefits of two products in one: A hydrating cream and smoothing gel swirled together. Twirl Around defines, separates and tames unruly curls without frizz or crunchiness, and helps curls retain their shape and bounce all day long. The formula is rich in shea butter and other ingredients that deliver intense hydration to curls and offers a pleasant, non-overpowering scent.

For Drying:

Many curly hair types break easily. To protect your hair, dry it gently and avoid scrubbing and rubbing motions when towel drying. Choose a soft towel such as those created from a jersey/T-shirt type material.

Curls often dry best without blow drying. If you must blow dry your hair, then use an adapter for your dryer to protect it from losing moisture during the blow drying process.
